Silo Rumor’s fourth release is a shimmering cloud of metallic harmonics embodied in a limited edition double-tape set signed under Filipe Silva’s moniker HOMO. Entitled Pregnant Sky, this release features two different edits, each in its own tape, to be played simultaneously on two cassette decks.

Pregnant Sky is constructed from a short recording of a church bell cut into four identical loops that are played simultaneously, each one subjected to a different gradual shift in pitch and speed, thus generating new harmonic and rhythmic interactions along its duration.

For this release, the piece was played into the resonant space of the chapel of Casa de Serralves and recorded therein, the process being carried out three successive times. These iterations bring forth a third-generation version that conveys a spatial component, emerging from a cumulative processing through the chapel’s acoustics.

Bells have been used to impregnate the air with vibrations, cleansing it from pestilence or stormy weather, or to serve as sentinels for imminent disasters. In “Pregnant Sky”, the bell’s taintless historical background is diverted by the replacement of the carillon for a PA system, and the usage of a chapel that was demoted from its original purpose, employed presently as a storage room.
